Here are the inks and pencils for the Umbrella Academy “APOCALYPSE SUITE” portfolio I just released.

.
I start out with a sketch on 8.5 x 11 bond paper. I used a Prismacolor col-erase pencil. I prefer them over regular pencils. Not sure why. They were introduced to me by animator friends and again during my tattoo apprenticeship. I feel that the color lead is more aesthetically pleasing too!
.
From there I’ll scan it and clean it up. I’ll also create a mock-up for the final product. In this case, it’s for the envelope art I created exclusively for the portfolio set. That way I can make sure it works with the type and will fit. The worst thing is having to not have a plan and lose hours trying to design around the artwork.
.
I’ll then print the sketch out onto 8.5 x 11 2-ply bristol board. I have a crappy b&w printer that can barely handle thick papers. Which is perfect because the toner won’t stick to the surface. I can easily erase it off. This saves me a TON of time because I don’t haft lose hours tracing and tightening up the sketch.
.
Then I start inking.
