Vinny Fiorello (Less Than Jake) commissioned me to design the Kickstarter Variant cover for his latest comic book and music project THE INEVITABLES!
An art & music project based on a group of nobodies trying to save the world. 22-page comic w/full album soundtrack.
The cool folks at KERRANG hit me up to do their cover and interior artwork to celebrate Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance) and his new series on Netflix "THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY". I was stoked and couldn't say no to such a cool opportunity. By chance, this is the 4th project I've done associated with Gerard Way. Totally weird to type that last sentence. I'm stoked that I've been an artist this long. Why haven't any pianos fallen on me yet (...knock on wood)?
I ended up doing 3 illustrations for the project. They requested that I draw Gerard from the "Revenge…" album era of his life. Since it's a weekly magazine the deadline was INSANE! I had a little over a week to turn in sketches, get approval, and then turn in finished pieces. Normally it takes me a week to design and illustrate a poster. 1 poster! One!! That's how my brain and hands work. Somehow I was able to cram 3 illustrations into 1 week. My brain STILL hurts but I'm very proud of completing the project and the final results.
Trying to get the vibe of the cover and be on the same page as my art director and the editor took me a few tries. They were really patient with me and let me find my groove. Sometimes it takes more than 1 try. Sometimes it takes 13 tries.
I started out by fitting the subject in the Umbrella Academy outfit from the show. The magazine wasn’t feeling it and that was fine. Drawing people in suits is much easier. For some reason, I just wanted to give him red eyes whenever I could. I guess it kind of made him look too evil. One day I’ll get to draw a portrait and make them look like a vampire. One day…
After the last try, the art director and editor were happy and I got to finish the piece. Normally I would’ve turned in sketches for all of the illustrations at the same time but there wasn’t much time and I really wanted to get as close to a likeness of Gerard as time would allow me. Again I only had a few days. So I turned in sketches for the other 2 illos once the cover was finished. I’m sure now I could draw him in my sleep.
I inked these as I normally do but then finished everything in Photoshop! In the 17 (or is it 16 or is it 13) years I've been a full-time freelance artist I've done all my color and design work in Illustrator. I wanted to try something new for this. My brain is still angry with me but… as I said I'm REALLY HAPPY with the final pieces.
UMBRELLA
For the “Umbrella” piece the art director had sent over an idea of Gerard holding an umbrella. I liked the idea and just put my own spin on it. I always wanted to draw someone holding an umbrella as skulls rained down on them. I was really enjoying Photoshop with this piece. Again, I normally used the program to make jpgs. It took some courage (aka stupidity) to try it on a freelance project instead of waiting to do a personal piece. Which I never have time for.
TYPEWRITER
The “Typewriter” piece was also fun to do but I was freaking out at this point. The art director referenced the Nick Cave poster I had designed and wanted basically that. Easy. But I didn’t make it easy. ( I never do…) I knew that he didn’t want me to replace Nick’s head with Gerard’s and call it day. So I had to come up with another way of drawing something I had already done without copying myself. So I threw everything in there. Hence the Easter Eggs. The only similarity is that I wanted to draw Gerard typing as if he were playing the piano. Same as what I did for the Nick Cave poster. Plus they’re both wearing suits.
So here are the Easter Eggs:
1. I hid the Umbrella Academy logo on the cover.
2. The typewriter is an Adler Universal 39. The same machine that Jack Torrance uses in the movie “The Shining”.
3. The Umbrella Academy logo takes place of the Adler logo for the typewriter. Plus I “hid” my “signature” signature on the other side. I think it’s egg-worthy.
4. Number 6 is the dead brother from the show. He’s dead the whole time so I didn’t spoil anything. I told the art director it was Vanya’s number because I only had a Netflix ad to go off and I was trying to do 3 weeks of work in 1 week! One week!!! I read the graphic novel years ago and just went with it cuz I knew how it ended. I hadn’t seen the show while I was working on these. After turning in the job a few days later the show premiered. 5 minutes in and I thought “I totally messed up!” But then #6 ends up being dead the whole time. So that totally works. Take that dementia!
I didn’t hafta fire myself. Lucky me…
5. That’s Vanya’s violin on the wall.
6. I “hid” 3 books on Gerard’s desk. ALL published by Dark Horse! Pretty sneaky I know.
• “The Umbrella Academy” (obviously).
• “The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys” (sorta obvious). I did one of the covers for that mini-series and also an art print that you should pick up nudgenudgewinkwink! Gerard Way wrote the book and Becky Cloonan (the coolest person alive) drew it.
• ”Don’t Hold Your Breath” (not obvious). In 2010 Dark Horse published a book on me and my artwork. I recently heard it was soon to be on permanent display in the Smithsonian. It’s true! And dogs can’t look up!
I’m sure it’s in the bargain bin.
7. Alexisonfire has a new album coming out. They should hire me!
8. Kerrang also made the COVER and UMBRELLA illos into posters that come with the magazine. Pretty stoked! Can’t wait to see them sell for millions on eBay…
9. To date, this is the fourth project I’ve done involving this dude aka Gerard Way. If anyone can name all 4… I will hook you up with a bunch of cool crap. Email me. If you physically own all 4 I will give you a free drawing! Luckily I don’t hafta disqualify my family. They have no idea what I do for a living.

Painting walk-through for the Harley-Davidson show I was in.
Now that the show is done. I posted a WALK -THROUGH on how I painted the tank. I mostly did it for myself so I wouldn't forget how the first side was painted while I worked on the second side.
Included are pics of the spider bites I got during the whole process. Gruesome...

Here’s the official artwork I did for the 2014 WARPED TOUR this was a collaboration between photographer Lisa Johnson and myself. I was really stoked when Kevin Lyman, Kerrie and Julie called and asked if I’d be interested in the project. Working with them again was a blast and they let me go nuts and try out the collage style I’ve been noodling with. After some dusting off the cobwebs of my overstuffed brain I realize it’s the seventh Warped Tour project I’ve done with them since they tapped me to do posters in 2004! Very humbling and flattering that they’d want to work with me so many times. Thank you!

The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 with a Forbidden Planet variant cover
Here's a cover I designed for Gerard Way, Shaun Simon and Becky Cloonan's comic book. Really stoked to have been a small part in the Killjoys universe. This was a ton of fun (and twice as much drawing) to do and a departure from my usual illustration style. I tried mixing my regular style with a new style I've been developing over the past year. Everyone on the book was geeked on what I turned in. Made my day. Hope I get to play in their sandbox some more.
You can purchase it through FORBIDDEN PLANET
Years ago, the Killjoys fought against the tyrannical megacorporation Better Living Industries, costing them their lives, save for one—the mysterious Girl. Today, the followers of the original Killjoys languish in the Desert while BLI systematically strips citizens of their individuality. As the fight for freedom fades, it’s left to the Girl to take up the mantle and bring down the fearsome BLI or else join the mindless ranks of Bat City!

This is a new piece of art created for the Blunt Fink show curated by Matt Dye of Blunt Graffix. The theme was to take an iconic pop culture movie and mix it with the style of "Big Daddy" Roth's - Rat Fink.
It was nice to show people I have more range than what they're used to seeing. Sometimes that creative box we comfortably create for ourselves needs to be renovated and built upon.
It was fun to play with a few colors I barely ever use. It was also fun to "Fink Out" the Ghostbusters Logo. I was really honored to be invited into the show. Hope you guys dig it.

Piece I did for the Ellen Stag Мишка 2013 Calendar. I did Ms. June. Well I didn’t “doooo” Ms. June (Marlo Marquise). You can purchase the calendar from Mishka direct. If I’m lucky they’ll send me one.
The project was fun because I was told to stay in theme with the old pulp paperback novels from the 30’s and 40’s. Lots of skulls and skeletons. The pose wasn’t easy to work with but I found a fun solution. Hope ya dig. You can see some process photos I posted as I worked on the piece.
I stole this from the Bloglin:
“While each month will still feature a sexy nude model as shot by the lovely and talented Ellen Stagg, we’ve also recruited a dozen artists, each of whom got to do an illustration on or around one of the photos (plus little comics from Johnny Ryan!).”

I'm teaming up with 2 other artists to produce licensed art prints of a few Suicide Girls, for Comic Con. They're sharing the booth (#433) with us this year so I figured, fuck it, let's do some art prints. And Missy gave us the green light. The model I chose to illustrate is MEOW.
This is just a warm up. I'm trying to get familiar with Meow's features so I can get her likeness for the art print. I pieced this together from 2 photos of her. I chose to go with a simple pose for starters. I just wasn't digging that her hair was pulled back. So I looked at a different photo of her for the hair.
This was all done with an HB pencil and a kneaded eraser. On Rives BFK paper (damn you James Jean). I haven't tried this in 15 years. It turned out better than I expected. Not sure if I'm going to use this approach for the art print. Might not be ready for it yet.

For the Dragon Clothing Mystery Tour. There is no theme. The only thing is that the text does not get changed and it stays at the bottom. Below it there will be some sponsor logos. There were 2 other artists involved in this project and we all decided to have a theme for the first poster and use the same color scheme. After that we were gonna do whatever wanted.
Here's the 2nd of three posters I hafta do for the Dragon Clothing Mystery Tour. I've been watching too many Tsui Hark flicks and wanting to do some more zombies. I tried to keep the central figure clean and make everything around her dirty and textured.

This was exclusive to Brand New's street team. Only 1000 copies were pressed of this puppy and I think they sold out within an hour or two. I wish more bands did this...and hire me too...nudge nudge. Good luck trying to find them. I don't have any for sale...so don't ask. Solly Cholly. Check ebay...they tend to go for $75 - $300 a pop.

My first comic book cover...one of the greatest moments of my geek life!!!
So what the hell does BATMAN hafta do with all of this? I did the cover for DETECTIVE COMICS #776!!!!! That's a BATMAN comic to all the uninitiated. That's right. When I got the call and they offered me the gig I almost fell over. Never in a million years did I think I'd get a chance like that. I had to follow up Andrew Robinson and Bill Sienkiewicz! In the grand scheme of things...doing a cover for a BATMAN title is highly coveted. And here I am, some guy that draws skulls and types out a few band names, gets a chance to contribute to one of the coolest characters around. Somebody up there decided to cut me a break. After agreeing to do it. I did my little dance and got right on it...cuz I wanted it to be my best effort. I wanted to knock the socks off of anybody that had feet. Judging from what the editors at DC said I did just that. I'm usually modest about the projects I do...but this...man..I can't help but be excited about it.
